Autónomo social security and the tarifa plana in 2026: what you'll actually pay

Published 19 June 2026 · 2 min read

Becoming autónomo in Spain means a monthly social security bill on top of your income tax. The system changed from a flat fee to one based on what you actually earn, and there's a cheap starter rate most new autónomos can claim. Here's how it works in 2026.

General information, not personal tax advice — always confirm your own position with a qualified gestor or accountant. See the note at the end.

Two separate bills, not one

When you go self-employed in Spain, you owe two different things. There's IRPF, your income tax, settled quarterly with Modelo 130 and annually with Modelo 100. And separately there's autónomo social security, a monthly contribution to the Spanish system that covers your pension, healthcare and benefits.

People coming from the UK often expect something like Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance bundled into the tax return. In Spain it's a distinct monthly payment, and for years it was a sore point because everyone paid the same flat fee regardless of what they earned.

The system is now based on what you earn

That flat fee is gone. Autónomo social security now runs on a 15-bracket system (the tramos), tied to your real net income. You estimate which bracket your earnings fall into, pay that monthly amount, and Spain reconciles it later against what you actually made. Earn more, pay more. Earn less, pay less.

The practical upshot: your estimate matters. Pitch it too low and you'll owe the difference at reconciliation. Pitch it too high and you've overpaid and have to claim it back. Knowing your real numbers through the year is what keeps this clean.

The tarifa plana: the cheap start

New autónomos can usually claim the tarifa plana, a reduced flat rate of around €80 per month in 2026, for the first period after registering. It's there to make the first year survivable while you find your feet. There are eligibility conditions (it's aimed at people who are genuinely new to the regime), so check you qualify before you bank on it.

When the tarifa plana period ends, you roll onto the normal income-based brackets.

How it fits with the UK side

If you've still got UK ties, the obvious worry is paying twice: UK National Insurance and Spanish social security. Generally you shouldn't. There's a social security agreement that determines which country's system you contribute to, and the goal is one, not both in full. Which one applies depends on your specific setup, so this is a confirm-with-a-professional point rather than a guess-and-hope one.

Don't forget it's deductible

One bit of good news that softens the monthly sting: your autónomo social security contributions are generally a deductible business expense against your income tax. So the headline monthly figure isn't the true net cost once it reduces your IRPF. The catch, as always, is records. You only get the deduction cleanly if you've kept the proof.

That's the quiet theme of being autónomo in Spain. The rules aren't impossible, but they reward people who keep their numbers straight as they go. Forensix exists to take that admin off your plate: it captures and converts your receipts and expenses so the deductions are there when you file, in a format you or your gestor can use directly. It doesn't register you as autónomo and it doesn't file for you. It keeps the data right so the rest is easier.

FAQ

How much is the tarifa plana in 2026?

The tarifa plana (flat reduced rate) for new autónomos is around €80 per month in 2026, available for the first period after registering, subject to eligibility conditions. After it ends you move onto the income-based bracket system.

How is autónomo social security calculated now?

It's based on your real net income, under a 15-bracket (tramo) system. You estimate your earnings, pay the matching bracket monthly, and Spain reconciles it against your actual income later. Higher earnings mean a higher monthly contribution.

Do I pay both UK National Insurance and Spanish social security?

Generally you contribute to one country's system, governed by the social security agreement, not both in full. Which one depends on your situation. Confirm your own case with a gestor or accountant.

Is autónomo social security tax deductible?

Your autónomo social security contributions are generally a deductible business expense against your IRPF, which softens the real cost. Keep the records.
